Frequently Asked Questions
Most of our clients notice an improvement in hair lustre, quality and volume within just a few weeks of using our Extract, Fortifying hair shampoos and hydrating products. Noticeable improvement in hair growth is typically seen in as little as 2-3 months. The majority will experience a 30-70% improvement in hair quality/amount.
The more consistent you are, the more improvement in hair quality and scalp health you will see. Should you choose to stop using your customised Extract, you will no longer experience the benefits of the products, and your hair and scalp condition will gradually regress to the state it was prior to using the Extract.
Our Extract is a topical liquid for daily scalp application. The non-greasy formula is made from the finest proprietary ingredients derived from plant materials as well as organic constituents from cow´s milk. Custom-blended to suit each client´s individual needs, when used according to the prescribed instructions our Extract helps to restore hair quality, scalp health and reverse hair thinning.
The Extract contains proprietary ingredients derived from burdock root, marigold, apple, sandalwood and cow’s milk, alongside naturally occurring sterols, tannins and fatty acids found in botanicals.
As a part of your personalised and restorative hair regime, the Extract optimises conditions for hair growth by improving the scalp microbiome and circulation in the dermis while activating dormant hair follicles and thickening existing hairs.
We believe in the uniqueness and diversity of human beings. No two scalps or heads of hair are the same, which is why each Extract is custom-blended to your specific requirements. Both consultation and Hair Assessment allow us to determine whether or not you will benefit from Extract use. If you are a suitable candidate, we will hand-blend it to your individual hair and scalp. We only accept you into our Extract program if we genuinely believe that we can help you.
The Extract is ideal for anyone experiencing male or female pattern hair thinning (androgenetic alopecia), irrespective of gender, age or ethnicity. We can help almost anyone who wishes to optimise hair quality, grow more, thicker, healthier and longer hair. Additionally, we can help children of all ages whose hair might not be developing to its full potential.
It is vital that you consult your doctor to determine whether or not any treatments or medications you are currently taking list hair loss as a potential side effect. In some cases, hair will start to grow back upon completion of chemotherapy treatment. However, many will notice that their hair does not grow back in the same quality as before. In such cases, Harklinikken can likely help. For those wanting to start Extract after finalising chemotherapy, please wait at least four months before using. For those looking to optimise their hair quality and scalp conditions during chemotherapy, we recommend using Harklinikken shampoo, conditioner and styling products, which are free from potentially problematic preservatives, colourants, perfume, silicone and petrochemicals.
A hair transplant is deemed successful if it looks natural and covers a thinning area well. However, hair transplantation does not solve hair loss, as hair will continue to decrease in quality and amount following the transplant, which often leaves behind transplanted hairs on the top of the head only, resulting in an unnatural look. If you have sufficient hair on top of your head that has not been transplanted, Harklinikken’s Extract can most likely help increase the quality of your hair while maintaining your existing hair.
We can help individuals with many different hair and scalp challenges. However, we cannot help those with alopecia areata, alopecia universalis, alopecia totalis or other autoimmune hair loss or scalp disorders. Additionally, if you have a severe scalp condition or we suspect an underlying medical condition is the cause of your hair loss, we may refer you to a dermatologist or other specialist to ensure any possible issues are addressed first.
Your customised Extract is applied to the scalp with a soft-tipped syringe for easy application. You can also apply the Extract using a cotton pad. Click on the link to see how to apply: https://player.vimeo.com/video/488090887 (https://player.vimeo.com/video/488090887)
Our Extract should be applied in two doses a minimum of 30 minutes apart. There is a limit to how much your hair follicles can absorb per application, so for optimal results apply as prescribed.
Our Extract is intended for use on the scalp only. However, some clients have chosen to use it on eyebrows and/or facial hair with positive results. We do not advise using it on the eyelashes as it may irritate the delicate eye area.
If your scalp becomes damp/wet during exercise, you should wait a minimum of two hours before applying the Extract. However, if you undertake light exercise and your scalp does not feel damp, you may apply your Extract 30 minutes after exercising.
The Extract can be applied at any time of day, as long as your scalp is completely dry (minimum 2 hours after it gets wet/damp). For best results, allow the Extract to work for a minimum of 6-8 hours, preferably longer.
The scalp differs from the other areas of the skin in several ways. Firstly, the scalp has a lower barrier function, making it prone to skin problems as it does not have the same protection from unwelcome environmental influences.
The scalp also has more and larger hair follicles and more sebaceous glands than other areas of the skin. This means that it is important to maintain a proper hair care routine, which includes washing daily or every other day to avoid sebum (oil) build-up and scalp and/or hair follicle irritation/inflammation which, if left untreated, can lead to hair thinning.
If it happens once in a while, it will have a negligible impact on your hair. However, if you only use the Extract every two days, the level of hair gain you can achieve compared to daily use is approximately 33 %. The more consistent you are, the better your hair and scalp health will be – and the better overall results you will see. Think of the Extract as a daily optimiser of hair and scalp health, similar to brushing your teeth or cleansing your face.
If you are experiencing an itching or burning sensation after using Extract, you may have an underlying scalp condition that needs to be addressed. Many hair products on the market contain problematic ingredients that coat the hair and scalp, creating an imbalance. This can be difficult to detect. It is important to maintain a proper hair care routine which includes washing hair daily or every second day to avoid build-up, irritation/inflammation and follicle infections caused by sebum (oil).
Should any irritation persist, contact Customer Success by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org (mailto:email@example.com) or by phone at 1-877-657-0100 (tel:+1877-657-0100).
In some cases, hair shedding is experienced upon starting to use the Extract. This is not a loss of hair, but rather a shift from weaker to better quality hair, as new and thicker hair replaces weaker, thinner hair. Many who experience minor shedding at the beginning of their Harklinikken regime will often see results as early as 2-3 months into their treatment.
No. Harklinikken’s Extract does not result in increased hair growth on the body.
Once you start to use the Extract, we recommend that you combine treatment with our shampoos, conditioners and styling products which have been specially developed to work together for optimal results.
As a Harklinikken client, you will receive guidance and products tailored to your specific needs. From your initial consultation, we are here to help you attain the best hair possible — and maintain what you achieve. More than half of our clients have tried many treatments, procedures, hair products and food supplements without effect. For those who wish to combine treatments, we ask you to consult one of our Hair Specialists as there are specific treatments that cannot be undertaken in conjunction with the Extract.
Yes, you can.
If you already have extensions, you can continue to wear them while using the Extract. However, for best scalp and hair health we recommend that you only use extensions for a short period of time after starting the Extract, as extensions and other hairstyles can significantly impact hair thinning and even cause permanent hair loss. We also ask you to minimise your use of heat styling and chemical processes. Embracing a more natural hairstyle and taking a break from harmful procedures gives your hair the opportunity to rest and restore.
We do not recommend keratin treatments as they coat the hair, often with problematic chemicals which prevent real and often vital hydration from being absorbed by your hair strands. However, should you wish to use keratin treatments, please contact us so that we can advise you on the best course of action.
Certain medications with side effects that include hair loss can hinder your progress. We recommend consulting one of our Hair Specialists or your general practitioner if you have any concerns regarding medication-related hair loss.
Whether directed specifically at hair growth or merely for general use, food supplements can only positively impact hair growth if you are deficient. Once the needs of your body are met, anything beyond its requirement becomes superfluous and can even cause inflammation. If you already eat a healthy, balanced diet, supplements will not benefit you. If you are on a low-fat or low-calorie diet, you may see some benefits from taking supplements, the effects of which are likely minimal.
Yes. Harklinikken uses ingredients and technology based on plant ingredients and derivatives of cow´s milk, so all of our products are safe for use during pregnancy and while nursing. Additionally, our products do not contain perfume, colourants, silicones or parabens, to mention a few.
During pregnancy, the body’s typical hair shedding cycle is postponed and many women notice a change in their hair quality during pregnancy, often more voluminous and lustrous. However, around 12 to 16 weeks after giving birth, many hairs enter into a resting phase and begin to shed, initiating the hair loss that did not occur during pregnancy. This often feels like excessive shedding and may give cause for concern but is a natural part of the hair cycle and signifies the body returning to its normal state. That said, many women experience changes to the texture and quality of their hair after childbirth. This is typically a sign of a predisposition to genetic thinning and can trigger a gradual yet more aggressive miniaturisation of the hair follicles. After giving birth, particularly the first time, most women encounter an entirely different lifestyle, with new eating habits and sleep patterns, both of which can stress the body and exacerbate hereditary hair thinning. For those who have given birth 6+ months ago and have noticed their hair returning thinner or not in the same quality, we recommend taking our Hair Assessment or scheduling a consultation to get started on a personalised hair regime.

A common problem for those experiencing hair thinning, hormonal changes and a reduction in hair mass coupled with incorrect hair care can contribute to excess sebum (oil) production in the scalp. Approximately 30% of our clients have hair thinning due to a lack of good scalp health. Additionally, as hair starts to thin the hair follicles gradually shrink as they undergo a process called miniaturisation. During miniaturisation, the life cycle of each strand of hair shortens, meaning it cannot grow as long, live as long and is unable to retain the same amount of moisture it once did, thereby reducing the thickness of each strand.
We recommend using the Balancing Shampoo to restore scalp health and our Daily Conditioner and Leave-in Hair Hydrating Creme, using the latter as often as possible throughout the day to hydrate each hair strand from deep within, increasing elasticity and shine and reducing breakage.
Many hair products contain ingredients such as silicone that coats the hair to create the illusion of hydration. Harklinikken aims to restore natural moisture to each hair strand from the inside out, starting by removing unwanted build-up. This means that you may experience hair that is drier than usual. With the continued use of Harklinikken´s hair care regime, your hair will become increasingly hydrated without the coating that other products leave behind.
Balancing Shampoo is best for those with an extremely dry scalp. Suitable for daily use, its mild formulation gently balances the skin’s pH level to leave hair feeling cleansed and nourished. Dermatologists regularly recommend our Balancing Shampoo for its ability to help combat dandruff and mild seborrheic dermatitis. Additionally, our custom-blended Extract can work wonders on dry scalps, restoring its overall health. If your scalp is not only dry but also shows signs of eczema or seborrheic dermatitis, we recommend specialised shampoos or a consultation with a dermatologist prior to using our products.
The scalp differs from other areas of skin in several ways. Firstly, the scalp has a lower barrier function, making it prone to more skin problems as it does not have the same protection from unwelcome environmental influences.
While the skin on your scalp is similar in structure to that of your face, the scalp has more and larger hair follicles and more sebaceous glands than other areas of the skin. This means that it is important to maintain a proper hair care routine, which includes washing daily or every other day to avoid sebum (oil) build-up and scalp and/or hair follicle irritation/inflammation which, if left untreated, can lead to hair thinning.
When washing your hair, focus on your scalp, gently massaging in circular movements for approximately 30 seconds. When washing hair daily, avoid applying shampoo to the lengths of your hair. Instead, focus on the scalp and apply conditioner to your hair prior to using shampoo to protect your hair while you rinse.
Many clients ask us if it is normal to shed 50-150 hairs per day, having read this to be the norm. The amount varies greatly from one person to another and should never be used to determine what’s normal for you. What matters more than the amount of hair you shed is the quality of the hair that replaces it.
It is important to remember that heavy shedding does not always mean that your hair is thinning. Under normal circumstances, when a hair falls out a new hair of the same quality will replace it. Even though you may be shedding more than usual, once it normalises your hair will grow back the same as it was before. However, if your shed hairs are replaced by hairs with smaller diameter shafts, i.e. thinner strands, this is considered hair loss. Although several conditions can cause this, it is most commonly seen in individuals who have a genetic predisposition called male/female pattern thinning.
One of the key reasons for hair breakage is hair thinning. Thinning hair is exponentially more prone to breakage. It is important to determine the cause of hair breakage in order to treat and reverse hair thinning. Since hair thinning typically happens gradually, often starting at a young age, it is important to start a program that will effectively reverse thinning. Harklinikken’s customised Extract is a topical liquid made from the finest plant-based ingredients and applied to the scalp daily. Custom-blended to each individual, Extract restores hair quality and reverses hair thinning. Hydrated hair – not simply coated with silicone – is much more elastic, thus more protected and less prone to breakage and split ends. Infusing your hair with moisture will enable it to grow longer, healthier and more vibrant. For an intensive moisture boost, we recommend using our nourishing and restorative Hair Hydrating Mask – free from silicone, wax and petrochemicals that coat the hair – at least 2-3 times weekly, ideally leaving it on the hair overnight or for a few hours before rinsing.
Whether specifically targeting hair growth or merely general supplements, food supplements can only positively impact hair growth if you are deficient. Once the needs of your body are met, anything more becomes superfluous and can even cause inflammation. If you already eat a healthy, balanced diet, supplements will not benefit you. If you are on a low-fat or low-calorie diet, you may see some benefits from taking supplements, the effects of which are likely minimal.
Heat stylers expand the hair cuticle and speed up loss of moisture from the hair. Using heat stylers on hair that is already porous, chemically processed or otherwise compromised can result in excessive moisture loss and duller, drier, lifeless hair. Extreme heat may also aggravate the sebaceous glands in the scalp, causing them to produce more oil in order to protect the scalp from dryness or irritation. As these are undesirable consequences, we recommend reducing the use of heat stylers and, whenever possible, using a low to medium heat setting. Additionally, we recommend avoiding products that contain silicone, colourants, parabens, petrochemicals, mineral oil and fragrance.
Our multipurpose styling spray provides texture, hold and volume without the problematic chemicals that come with conventional aerosol hair sprays. Use as a pre-styling spray or finishing spray for a medium-strong hold.
If you are using the Extract treatment, our specialised shampoos, hydrating and styling products are essential to ensure optimal results.
We recommend Yves Durif and Sheila Stotts brushes and combs. Brush carefully, starting at the bottom of your hair and working on small sections at a time. If your hair is long, hold the remainder of your hair with your hand to prevent unnecessary pulling. Be extra careful brushing wet hair as water weakens the hair, removing up to one-third of its strength.
The Daily Conditioner and leave-In Hair Hydrating Crème are the perfect match. Formulated with unique technology and without the use silicone, colourants, perfume or problematic additives, leave-in Hair Hydrating Crème hydrates the hair to leave you with fuller, lustrous and livelier hair. It also protects against heat from blow dryers and heat stylers as well as sun exposure – and as it does not leave a film on the hair, it does not weigh it down.
Despite its name, dry shampoo does not clean your hair. Hair powders and dry shampoos simply give the illusion of freshly washed hair thanks to ingredients that may cause hair follicles to clog or create an imbalance in your scalp’s pH value. Known to irritate the scalp, they can also cause contact dermatitis and with continued use can lead to hair loss and/or thinning.
Our hydration products lock moisture deep into the hair rather than simply coating each strand with silicone or wax like conventional products. In order to increase elasticity and shine and reduce breakage, rather than simply masking damage, hair needs to be treated from within. We recommend avoiding ingredients like silicone, which prevents the hair from absorbing moisture, making it more prone to breakage and weighing it down. Silicone coating can irritate the scalp and hair follicles, which can cause problems with the hair’s ability to grow.
